Abstract
Grinding wheels made of electrocorundum or silicon carbide with vitrified or resinoid bond according to DIN 69100 Part 1 may only be operated at increased peripheral speeds (maximum working speeds) if approved by the German Grinding Wheel Committee (DSA).
Such DSA approvals are granted to manufacturers when a design test at an authorized testing facility (including the BIA - Institute for Occupational Safety) proves that the grinding wheels meet the requirements for safety against centrifugal force breakage specified in DSA 101.
Problem Statement
The scope of a DSA approval includes, in addition to the tested wheels, those with the same shape and bond that can be expected to have equal or better strength properties. The material designation contains information that is partly manufacturer-specific and not defined by a clearly measurable characteristic value according to a standardized procedure.
This makes identity verification on fragments of a shattered grinding wheel difficult during accident investigations.
Research Initiative
Therefore, at the suggestion of the DSA and on the initiative of the Working Group of Iron and Metal Professional Associations at the BIA, the research project “Determination of Characteristic Values for Vitrified and Resinoid Bonded Grinding Wheels” was conducted, supported by the Research Association for Grinding Wheels in the Association of German Abrasive Manufacturers (VDS).
